The Warrnambool City Council has been in discussions with the Federal Government for months supporting the move of migrants to regional areas including Warrnambool.
Over one thousand jobs in the Greater South West Region could be filled by migrant families.
Warrnambool City Council Director City Growth Andrew Paton says there's a real need for more workers in the growing meat and dairy industries.
He says an important test of any successful skilled migration program is that the jobs should be filled first locally if at all possible.
Mr Paton says Warrnambool is definitely towards the top of the list with the Federal Government on this migration proposal.
He says it will be a positive step forward for our local economy and will bring diversity into our region.
